The colder weather will soon be upon us so it is time to start planning what to wear when the temperature drops. Here is our round-up of the top menswear trends seen on the world`s catwalks for autumn winter 2012.

Not Quite Black
Menswear is traditionally very dark in winter and this year is no different. Inky blue black is the colour of the season for men in the know. Seen on the catwalks of Paul Smith and Corneliani to name but a few, this colour is bound to find its way to the high street.

Leather Everywhere
Leather was the material of choice on both men`s and women`s runways for autumn winter. Everything from gloves to jackets and even trousers has received the leather makeover. For those out there not brave enough for the head to toe in hide look, knits and trousers were also showcased with leather panels for a softer take on the trend.

Fur Touches
Textures were everywhere and the womenswear trend for fur, faux and real, was also seen on the menswear catwalks. Burberry and Trussardi both featured furry collars on jackets and coats.

Coats Galore
It is not rocket science to suggest coats will be big this winter but this winter coats will actually be big. In the oversized sense of course. Designers such as Dior Homme are going crazy for doing everything in a roomy way at the moment so think volume when buying a coat.

Big Man Bags
Whilst on the subject of roomy, bags deserve a mention. If you are going to carry a bag this season, make it big, leather and structured and you will be on to a winner.

Slouchy Knits
There is nothing more comforting than a slouchy knit so thank heavens that Phillip Lim showed us how it is done with his ultra-slouchy turtle neck.

Mixing Up The Layers
Playing with layering is a key trend for the coming season. Think about wearing a cropped jacket such as a bomber over a work suit to add interest to your look. Burberry did this in style on the runways.

Velvet
Not just confined to the realms of the smoking jacket, velvet is part of the season`s love of texture. Designers sent plain and patterned velvet jackets down the catwalks. Again if you are not quite brave enough to go the whole hog, the high streets are sure to have easy touches of velvet to add to your look.

Army Chic
Let us face it, velvet is not everyone`s thing but do not fear. This season`s twist on military style is an easy to wear look that anyone can achieve. You can max the look with full on military styling, structured jackets and brass buttons or just tap into the trend by choosing a more relaxed selection. Olive, khaki and neutral tones mixed with camo prints bring this look together. Check out the examples at Volcom clothing for a streetwear take on the trend.
